Rue de Rivoli
Painted in 2010, Rue de Rivoli takes its title from one of the most iconic streets in Paris, a city that has played a central role in the development of European graffiti culture and in the artist’s visual imagination. The work is not intended as a literal representation of the place, but as an emotional and cultural evocation of it.
Through layers of handwriting, urban symbols and textural interventions, the surface reflects the visual rhythm of the city: weathered walls, overlapping posters, traces of footsteps and memories embedded in the urban fabric. Just as on the streets of Paris, writing and architecture seem to engage in a constant dialogue, creating a composition in which order and spontaneity coexist in harmony.
The title evokes a symbolic place, but also a period in the artist’s life marked by travel, exploration and encounters with some of Europe’s most influential urban scenes. In this sense, Rue_de_Rivoli It can be read as a mental map rather than a geographical one: a collection of memories, atmospheres and impressions transformed into a pictorial language.
The work reflects a phase in Kende’s artistic development in which graffiti is gradually transformed into contemporary painting, retaining its original energy whilst taking on a new contemplative dimension. Paris thus becomes not merely a backdrop, but a symbol of the relationship between urban space, memory and visual identity.
