No Reason

No Reason, 2010 — mixed media on canvas.

Painted in 2010, No Reason It belongs to a phase of Kende’s work in which the calligraphic gesture is progressively freed from any narrative or representational necessity. The title is a stark statement: no explanation, no justification, no meaning imposed from outside. Just the mark, in its most direct and authentic form.
The work depicts a section of an urban wall dominated by a monumental letter, so large that it extends beyond the boundaries of the composition.

The viewer perceives only a fragment of it, as if the surface of the canvas were incapable of containing it in its entirety. This choice evokes a characteristic typical of graffiti: the pursuit of a scale that transcends the medium itself, where the letter ceases to be a mere alphabetical element and transforms into architecture, landscape and physical presence.

The missing section does not represent an absence, but suggests a continuity beyond the edge of the work. The letter continues, as it were, beyond the field of vision, evoking those large-scale urban interventions in which even a surface area of several metres may prove insufficient to contain the scale of the gesture.
The train carriages weren’t big enough, nor were the walls, so the letters had to be cut down to the bare minimum.
The work is now part of a private Italian collection.
